SK Energy is Korea's leading oil refiner. The company responded
to Korea's economic upheaval last year by launching an aggressive
marketing campaign, focusing on product quality, restructuring
the organization and work force, and keeping its massive production
facilities in steady operation.
SK Energy . imported and refined 275 million barrels of
crude oil and sold 288 million barrels, for a 33.8% share of
the Korean market. As a result, the company steadfastly maintained
its top ranking position in the domestic refining industry.
SK Energy has been aggressively investing in and supporting R&D activities
to ensure that it remains world class. The R&D organization,
which is centered around the Daeduk Institute of Technology,
has achieved an impressive track record that includes YUBASE,
a base oil with very high viscosity index. YUBASE has been used
to develop ZIC, a top quality motor oil company for the 21st
century. Last year, the company's lubricant sales came to W222.2
billion, contributing significantly to the corporate bottom
line.
SK Energy is committed to safe operation, applying 30 years'
experience and worldwide practices to create its own strict
engineering and safety standards.
In 1993, the company became Korea's first to adopt Process
Safety Management. During 1998, the ongoing safety record
reached 8.8 million hours of accident-free operation. The
Korean authorities as well as overseas reinsurance firms recognize
this achievement to be among the best in the world for this
industry.
SK Energy has laid the ground
work for further development of Korea's petrochemical industry
by completing and starting up a new naphtha cracker with an
annual capacity of 100,000 tons-the largest such operation
in the nation. The company now has the capacity to produce
3.2 million tons of base olefins and intermediates a year.
These products are supplied to downstream facilities inside
SK Energy 's own complex as well as those of the Ulsan Petrochemical
Complex. As such, the company has an enormous impact on the
development of Korea's entire petrochemical industry.
SK Energy oraion has always been a leader in the effort to protect
the environment. The company continues to invest in new environmentally
sound facilities and to develop cleaner forms of energy and
environmental friendly products. Between 1996 and 1998, some
W670 billion (18.7% of outlays for total new equipment and
facilities) was invested in pollution prevention systems and
production facilities for cleaner fuels such as those with
low sulfur content. SK Energy . has earmarked another W130 billion
to improve and preserve environmental quality in Korea's provincial
areas.
"Corporate name was changed from Yukong Limited to SK Energy in 1997." |
